What It Means To Be A.B.I.M.E. Certified

What is ABIME?

ABIME is the world's premiere organization which sets the education and credentialing standard for Independent Medical Examiners and disability medicine. ABIME has certified over 3,000 exceptional physicians and professionals since 1996. ABIME is the number one source for Certified Physicians performing IMEs.

The American Board of Independent Medical Examiners (ABIME) is a quality assurance organization incorporated in July 1994 to establish national, uniform standards of competency for licensed physicians who conduct independent medical examinations. ABIME's Board of Directors includes well-known experts from multiple disciplines who regulate the application and examination process. ABIME certification is recognized as the national standard for physicians performing IME's.

Who qualifies as a Certified Independent Medical Examiner (CIME)?

ABIME identifies physicians who meet specific criteria for education, training and experience. They also meet continuing medical education requirements, demonstrate competency by passing a rigorous, 4-hour certification examination, and agree to abide by an ABIME ethical code. The certified independent medical examiner (CIME) receives an individual certification number, valid for five years.

Eligibility Requirements include a current, unrestricted medical license · a record clear of any disciplinary action imposed by a state medical board within the past five years · Board certification in a medical specialty recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties or the American Osteopathic Association, or have practiced medicine 5 years, including residency years · completion of at least 15 hours of continuing medical education in this field within three years prior to taking the examination · signed agreement to abide by the ABIME Guidelines of Conduct.

Who Requires an Independent Medical Examination (IME)?

An IME is required by a variety of professionals including claims adjusters, medical case managers, employers, workers' compensation board commissioners, and attorneys (defense and plaintiff). ABIME-certified independent medical examiners are an essential resource for case and claims management professionals. They provide impartial and thorough assessments to enhance the evaluation process and produce beneficial results for all involved, including the examinee.

Why Choose ABIME-Certified Physicians?

ABIME-certified physicians possess necessary medical skills and training in physical, behavioral, psychological and occupational assessment · draw upon in-depth experience to perform credible evaluations · provide thorough, objective, written analysis regarding diagnoses, causation, prognosis, maximal medical improvement, impairment, work capacity, appropriateness of care and care management · testify as an expert medical witness · recognize the value of impartiality and thoroughness in case evaluation · strive to conduct timely, cost-effective evaluations · abide by ABIME guidelines of conduct and ethical practice and · exhibit commitment to professional excellence and integrity.
